Do you wan to go fast? Do you want to climb faster? Corner faster? Have the best criterium wheel and climbing wheel all in one? Here it is.
The DuraAce 7850-SL wheelset is the best value for performance wheelset on the market. With silky smooth Dura Ace hubs, tubeless technology and stunning performance you can't go wrong.
About Tubeless:
Everyone always asks us about the tubeless technology. "Is is really worth it?" "Is it really any different?" Answer: Yes.
Here's a review from a past customer, Turner Johnson. Turner is a Cat 1 from the Pittsburgh area.
I've contemplated purchasing a set of Shimano's Dura-Ace tubeless wheels for some time now. I haven't heard much about them and online reviews have given me little insight. I decided the best way to get the scoop was renting the wheels through Echappe Equipment and trying them out for myself.
I chose to rent the wheels for The Crossroads Cycling Classic as well as the Hanes Park Criterium in North Carolina. Five days of crit racing would surely test the wheels' ability.
The Verdict:
Improved Handling – The big advantage to the tubeless set up is the ability to run a lower pressure without sacrificing rolling resistance. I rode the entire series at 90 PSI and didn't notice any added resistance. You can dive into a corner with the confidence that the wheel and tire combination aren't going to slip out from under you. Furthermore, the tread compound on the Hutchinson tires work great in damp conditions when you need it the most.
Stiffness – These wheels don't flex. You can trust that all of the power you put into the pedals isn't getting lost in side-to-side movement. The new wider flange hub and offset rim also makes the power transfer to the rear wheel noticeably more effective.
Stan's Sealant -I suggest using the sealant. The wheel “burped” during one race and released a small amount of the sealant. I never knew that it happened until I noticed the sealant's residue on my brake caliper and hub. After the race, I checked the tire and the pressure was still the same. I doubt that would be the case if the sealant hadn't been installed.
Compare:
Ksyrium SL Premium – The price is the same and the weight is nearly identical but the stiffness of the Shimano wheels, as well as the hub's smooth bearings, make for a much more high-performance wheel. I own a set of Ksyriums and wish I could trade them for the Shimano wheels.
Zipp 404 Clincher – Everyone in the sport has dealt with a mechanical and chances are you have stopped at the SRAM Neutral Support Tent for a wheel change. The Zipp 404, SRAM's neutral wheel, has superior aerodynamics but it loses to the Dura-Ace wheels in stiffness and handling. The Shimano wheels are not only head and shoulders above the 404s in these two categories, but they are also a much more affordable choice. At $1100, you could buy two sets of Shimano tubeless wheels rather than a single pair of $2650 Zipp 404s.
Overall:
You can't beat this wheelset. They will stand up to any technically demanding criterium while smoothly and comfortably guiding you through a long road race.
Try a set out for yourself and apply the rental fee to your purchase when you realize you can't ride without these wheels!
